Council hears updates on crosswalk art, federal-aid sign project, fireworks permits and historic facade application

City staff provided several project and permitting updates during the June 2 Angola City Council meeting, including a pedestrian crosswalk mural, a federal-aid signage project, fireworks permits and a historic façade application for a downtown building.
Rita reported that work began on a crosswalk at Harland Park and that artist Janelle Sloan from Relic and Purim will paint the crosswalk with students from FIST and sponsor Nate Lauer of State Farm. The street department provided barricades and lane control; staff hoped to complete the painting the following day, weather permitting.
Public works staff said the city’s new signs are part of a federal-aid project currently in multi-stage review. Stage 3 plans were to be submitted soon; anticipated letting was February 2026. Staff indicated they were proceeding with the federal process and had not been advised of any denial.
Fire department staff reported that several fireworks permits for July 4 and July 5 events had been received and signed; Silver Lake (US-20 West) will have a July 4 private display and Lake James has a July 5 display. Staffing and manpower plans to cover multiple displays were still being determined.
On a downtown building project, staff said the property owner (identified as Reinhold in the meeting) had submitted façade plans to the state and would appear before the Historic Preservation Commission for a certificate of appropriateness. The owner had also submitted internal remodel plans to the state; staff noted the project was behind the originally hoped-for schedule due to required firewall and fire separation solutions linked to separate property ownership above the second floor.
No council action was requested on these informational items during the meeting.
