Council honors Justice Harry T. Lemmon and proclaims Independence Day; appointment nominations to civil service board set for July 7

The St. Charles Parish Council on Monday posthumously honored retired Justice Harry T. Lemmon and adopted a proclamation recognizing the 240th anniversary of American independence while announcing upcoming meetings and appointments.
The council read a commemorative resolution in memory of Justice Harry Thomas Lemmon (Dec. 11, 1930–April 18, 2025), outlining his biography, judicial service and civic activities. The council resolved to set aside a page for the memoriam in the official minute book and said the meeting’s adjournment would be in his memory. Jake Lemmon, the justice’s son, accepted the memoriam on behalf of the family and said, “I certainly appreciate it. My family certainly appreciates it.”
Council members also read and adopted a proclamation recognizing July 4, 2025, as the 240th anniversary of American independence and invited citizens to the parish’s 35th annual festivities at Westbank Bridge Park in Luling on July 3, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with a fireworks display at dark. Joanne Fore and Grayson Tushart were invited to accept the proclamation on behalf of the event organizers.
The council introduced a resolution (file number 2025-0164) regarding an appointment to the St. Charles Parish Civil Service Board to fill the vacancy left by the expiration of Patrick O’Malley’s term. The council chair will accept nominations at the next meeting on Monday, July 7, 2025; no appointment was made at this meeting.
Clerk announcements included upcoming meetings for the Housing Authority (June 24), Hospital Service District No. 1 (June 25), Board of Adjustment (June 26) and Lafourche Basin Levee District (July 2). The council also reminded residents that the parish will observe Juneteenth on June 19 and Independence Day on July 4.
