Dispatch center upgrades 911 system; text-to-911 and training plans in progress

The county's dispatch center reported that a planned upgrade to the 911 system went live and that the next step is enabling text-to-911 service, though staff said the text capability is not yet active.
The dispatch director said several dispatchers attended peer-support and incident tactical dispatching training in May, and that the center will host a field training officer course funded through a grant at a local hotel (Flat Creek Inn and Suites) from June 9–13. The course was described as full, with 35–40 attendees from multiple counties.
Staff also said one part-time dispatcher left for a full-time law enforcement job in Bayfield County. The center is advertising for part-time dispatch positions and previously planned to sponsor some dispatchers through the law enforcement academy.
Committee members discussed the potential for accidental texts to 911 once text-to-911 is implemented; staff said accidental texts are expected to be less common than accidental dials and the center will monitor operations after activation.
