The City Council voted unanimously, 14-0, to support Proposition 12 — the Safe Neighborhood Parks, Clean Water, Clean Air, and Coastal Protection Bond Act — citing an estimated guaranteed allocation of about $43 million for Los Angeles if the bond passes.
Elliot Oppenheim of the Department of Recreation and Parks told the council the bond is the "largest park bond in US history" and that the city would qualify for approximately $23,000,023 from per-capita funds and about $19.5 million from Roberti-Z'berg-Harris programs, which require a 30% local match.
Councilmembers said the proposal emphasizes urbanized areas and provides competitive funding for playground replacement, regional youth soccer facilities, trails, riparian habitat projects and other items. Councilmember Richard Alarcon and others urged a broad public outreach campaign in Los Angeles to maximize local benefit.
The council recorded the vote as 14 ayes and directed members to support public outreach and coordination with park advisory boards and "Friends of" groups to prepare priority project lists should the measure pass.
