Washoe County manager Eric Brown to retire June 30; commissioners praise tenure

Eric Brown, Washoe County manager, told the county commission on June 10 that he has submitted his retirement and will leave the county effective June 30.
Brown said the timing followed an independent review of the office of the county manager and that he believed it was the right moment for new leadership. He told the board he was grateful to staff and county employees and that he could not list all the accomplishments in his remarks.
The announcement drew public and elected praise. Vice Chair Jean Herman thanked Brown for his service. Commissioner Alexis Garcia said Brown “has made a profound impact” leading the county through COVID, homeless services work and mental-health initiatives. Other commissioners offered similar thanks and good wishes.
Brown’s statement to the board was made during the regular meeting after a presentation and discussion of a consultant report on the county manager’s office. He said the consultant’s recommendations included a need to “reset the relationship” between the commissioners and the county manager’s office and that, after reflection, he decided to retire so the board could recruit a new manager.
The board did not take formal action on Brown’s announcement during the meeting; commissioners expressed support and planned next steps for the recruitment process.
Brown has served as Washoe County manager for roughly five and a half years. Commissioners and other officials said they will work with staff to move forward with a recruitment effort for his successor.
