Susie Taylor was elected chair of the Ojai City Park & Recreation Commission and Sage Itner was elected vice chair at the commission's regular meeting on June 5, 2025. Both elections passed by unanimous roll calls of the three commissioners present.
The commission voted to delay a decision on appointing a commission secretary until its September 2025 meeting. Commissioners said the handbook makes the secretary position optional and the city manager has encouraged commissions to appoint their own secretaries rather than rely on staff to take motions and record votes. Commissioners also cited the planned Granicus rollout and the availability of staff liaisons as factors in delaying a final decision.
During roll call votes for the officer positions, Commissioners recorded the following votes: Sage Itner — yes; Susie Taylor — yes; Commissioner Lear — yes. The commission also agreed to lay over approval of minutes from the June 1, 2023 meeting for further review because the packet did not include prepared action minutes.
Commissioners discussed practical implications of appointing a secretary. Several commissioners and staff said staff will continue to prepare finalized action minutes from the meeting video, but the city manager is encouraging commissions to identify a member to capture votes during meetings. Commissioners worried about the logistics (for example, using personal devices to time-stamp motions) and agreed to revisit the matter when a full commission is present.
The commission took the following formal actions at the meeting: elected Taylor as chair (approved 3–0), elected Itner as vice chair (approved 3–0), laid over approval of the 06/01/2023 minutes (laid over/pending), and voted to revisit the appointment of a secretary in September 2025 (approved 3–0).
The meeting was short and largely organizational; commissioners said they expect a fuller agenda and more substantive discussion when additional commissioners join in July.
