Webinar urges ongoing training, ethics programs and risk monitoring for grants management

Presenters on the NC Pro webinar recommended ongoing, targeted training for staff who manage grants and described ethics and risk management practices that support compliance. Ramon Alemar said training should be “very specific” to the program or fund and that training effectiveness should be evaluated with goals and KPIs.
Trainers recommended establishing an ethics and compliance program that includes a code of ethics, regular ethics training, fraud/waste/abuse policies and a whistleblower mechanism. Natalie Floyd said organizations should require disclosure forms where staff or leadership have potential conflicts of interest and retain those disclosures in a centralized location.
On risk management, presenters urged regular risk assessments, the development of mitigation plans, and monitoring of risk activities. Ramon Alemar recommended simple logs — even an Excel spreadsheet — to record risk timelines, actions and monitoring steps so organizations can show how risks were managed over time.
