American Legion building judged structurally unsound; board discusses donations, reuse and training

The Orderville Town Board received an update that the American Legion building appears structurally unsound and cannot be moved as previously planned. Staff said inspections and photos indicated the building would likely collapse if relocated.
Given that, the board discussed alternative uses and support. A staff member proposed allocating funds toward renovating a portion of the old fire station to provide a meeting space for the American Legion (for example, a room with heating/cooling and storage) and suggested creating a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for shared use. The board also discussed the possibility of offering the Legion storage in a town bay while longer-term arrangements are developed.
Fire-department staff suggested the old Legion Hall could be used for hands-on training (cutting holes in walls, knocking out doors, roof operations) rather than a live burn, noting burning would require extensive asbestos testing and certified personnel. Board members supported the idea of using the structure for non-burn training activities and instructed staff to coordinate with the American Legion and fire department to determine needs and a plan. No donation was approved; earlier $10,000 donation discussion was rendered moot by the building’s condition and can be withdrawn or reallocated to renovation work if the Legion pursues that option.
