The Salinas Historic Resources Board used its June meeting to confirm administrative items and future agenda scheduling.
Per the board bylaws, officers are elected at the first meeting after the first Monday in July; staff said the July meeting will include the formal election. During an agendized discussion, a board member asked whether the vice chair would move to chair and asked for volunteers. A person identified in the transcript only by the first name Michael agreed to serve as chair if nominated, and a board member named Eloise volunteered to serve as vice chair; the board said the nominations will be placed on the July agenda for a formal vote.
Staff provided logistical updates on the certificates of appreciation program. Yesenia Sedavia, assistant planner, said staff have formatted individualized certificates and are awaiting specialty card stock to print them so signatures from the board chair and the mayor can be added. Staff plan to coordinate presentation details with recipients, either by mail or in person, and said they hope to announce presentation details at a future city council meeting.
Staff also reported the city applied for a California Preservation Foundation (CPF) government/nonprofit membership that covers up to 10 people; staff said the invoice is being processed and membership activation will follow once payment is made. The membership would provide conference tickets and access to a library of recorded trainings.
On staffing, Christie Hopper introduced herself as the city’s new assistant community development director. Hopper said she started last Tuesday and described a background in historic preservation and planning, including work in Monterey and Hollister, and said she will temporarily oversee current planning and project implementation until staffing is adjusted.
Board member Heloise asked staff to consider adding a copy of the field guide A Field Guide to American Houses to the HRB reference library to support surveys and walking tours; staff said they would look into acquiring a copy for board and staff use.
The board also confirmed its regular July meeting date (the first meeting after the July 4 weekend) and that the meeting time will remain at noon. No votes on these administrative items were taken at the June meeting; the officer election will be agendized for July.
