McCreary County board reviews superintendent applicants, screening committee to recommend interviewees

The screening coordinator told board members that “11 people applied, 2 current district employees, 4 people that have worked in the district at some point in time, and then there's 7 other individuals that have not lived or worked in the district,” and noted one application arrived late because the online posting did not list a cutoff time.
The coordinator said the screening committee’s recommendations are advisory. “The way this process works is that the screening committee will make recommendations to the board. It's not binding on the board legally,” the staff member said, adding that the committee gives stakeholders a chance to offer input but the board retains decision authority.
Board members discussed how many interviews to schedule. Members expressed a preference for three interviews to allow 45 minutes to an hour each; one board member said four interviews “gets hairy” because longer interviews can push the schedule and leave no time for discussion afterward. The board agreed the screening committee should aim to narrow its list to match the number of interviews the board wants to hold.
The coordinator described the planned timeline: the screening committee will meet again, complete recommendations, the board will go into executive session to review the recommendations, and interviews would be scheduled the following week. The coordinator said she will provide committee binders containing all 11 applications before the next meeting.
The board confirmed that its next special meeting will be held June 10, 2025, at the Central Office; the exact start time was not specified. The meeting ended after a motion to adjourn; Braxton recorded the vote by saying, “Aye.”
