Austin Vision Zero program reports drop in serious injuries, launches citywide lighting plan and ramps distracted-driving work

Joel Meyer, the City of Austin’s transportation safety officer, briefed the Urban Transportation Commission on the Vision Zero program and recent data, funding and countermeasures. Meyer said that through April 2025 the combined number of serious injuries and fatalities on Austin roadways was down about 17 percent from the same period last year and 41 percent below the 2019–2023 five‑year average. He said the city has recorded more than 1,100 years of life lost so far in 2025 from roadway fatalities.

Meyer credited recent investments — including sidewalks, bikeways, protected intersections, signal timing and intersection projects — for measurable safety gains on city‑owned streets.
