County recognizes Job Challenge Academy graduates and adopts resolution honoring second graduating class

The Hawaii County Council on May 21 adopted Resolution 179-25 recognizing the second graduating class of the Job Challenge Academy at the Keaukaha Military Reservation in Hilo.
Thirteen graduates were acknowledged by the council. Multiple academy staff and associates testified in support of the resolution, describing Job Challenge as a career‑focused, wraparound program that provides career pathways in construction, culinary arts, healthcare and other fields and offers mentorship, life skills and certifications. Several student graduates described earning diplomas, certifications and job experience while receiving support from the program.
Council Member Heather Kimball, the resolution’s sponsor, described a pilot civics component run with the academy — a series of five sessions covering government structure, public speaking and local civic processes — and said students had attended council sessions and submitted testimony as part of the training. Council members praised the graduates and staff, encouraged continued engagement with county offices, and adopted the resolution by voice vote. The resolution also notes a June graduation event for the academy.
