Derby event organizer outlines plans for Smoke on the Plains Barbecue & Music Fest

Derby event staff on May 27 presented details about the 14th annual Smoke on the Plains Barbecue & Music Fest, scheduled for June 13–14 at High Park.
Andrea Walters, the city’s new event organizer, described a revised festival layout intended to expand the competition footprint and improve pedestrian flow. Key changes include moving the KCBS‑sanctioned professional teams and judges tent to the east side of the pond to provide more space and better utilities, relocating food trucks to a gravel road behind the amphitheater for better access, and positioning the People’s Choice tasting tent between Zimmerman and the main stage to centralize activity.
Walters said the event will include a Friday evening Kids Q barbecue competition, live music on the main stage, a smoking 5K, car show, kids’ corner, ax‑throwing, food and drink vendors, and a People’s Choice tasting supported by volunteers from McConnell Air Force Base’s 972nd unit. She said the event is free to the public and supported in part by city sponsorship and a group of local sponsors. Attendance and volunteer support were highlighted as crucial to the event’s success.
Council members and staff expressed appreciation to the volunteer signups and encouraged community help promoting the festival through social media. Walters encouraged residents to follow the Derby Barbecue and Music Fest Facebook page for schedule and volunteer details.
