Council approves Rock River Rapids pool and slide refurbishments, contracts awarded

Derby City Council on May 27 authorized contracts to refurbish the pools and slides at Rock River Rapids and to apply new coatings ahead of winter maintenance.
Parks director Steve White told the council the work will include recoating the lap pool, shallow pool, lazy river and the main play structure, and refurbishing slide interiors and exteriors. The city issued a four‑week RFP and received eight responses. Staff recommended Wildcat Painting for pool painting ($125,000) and Amusement Restoration Companies LLC for slide refurbishment ($140,323).
Council members clarified scheduling and frequency of these projects. White said the last interior slide coating occurred in 2014 and pool coatings in 2018; the new work is planned to begin after the 2025 season with a target start in August so the coatings can cure before winter. The council approved the agreements (motion carried unanimously 8–0).
White said the interior slide surfaces will be buffed, waxed and polished where appropriate; other slide surfaces will receive gel coating or protective treatments as required by the vendor. Staff said the work is routine maintenance to preserve slide performance and protect the pool structure from long‑term wear.
Contracts were authorized and staff will return with schedule and project coordination to minimize impact on next season’s operations.
