Commissioner Jim Perna presented the proclamation noting that James Giftus founded National Coney Island in 1965 with a first location at Macomb Mall in Roseville. The proclamation, adopted by unanimous vote, described the restaurant as "famous for their Detroit‑style Coney Island hot dog topping" and credited current leadership for expanding the business to 17 locations and about 850 employees, according to the board's text.
Tom Giftus, who attended the meeting with several longtime employees and guests, accepted the proclamation and thanked the board. "We take a lot of pride in our history," he said, and acknowledged staff and family members who helped sustain the business over six decades.
The board voted to adopt the proclamation without dissent and presented a copy to Giftus during the meeting.
