Boulder BLA approves Twisted Pine's application to add brewpub service at Walnut Street site

The City of Boulder Beverage Licensing Authority on May 21 voted to approve a change-of-class application from Twisted Pine Brewing Company, allowing the long-established Boulder brewer to operate as a brewpub at 3201 Walnut St., unit A.

Applicant representatives told the board Twisted Pine has operated in Boulder since 1995 and in the current location since 2002. The applicant said there would be no change to hours, seating or the building footprint; the change would allow Twisted Pine to expand beverage offerings (for example, wine) and better serve nearby residents.

A petition survey undertaken by Oedipus Petitioning found strong local support: from 316 potential contacts, petitioners reached 194 people, with 126 signatures in favor (104 businesses and 22 residents), one business opposed and one signature deleted for illegibility. Erin McCullough of Oedipus Petitioning told the board 99.21% of participating signers were in favor.

The applicant described operational controls that would continue under the new class: patrons order at the bar where IDs are checked, employees are required to complete state-approved responsible-alcohol training (TIPS) within 30 days of hire, and management uses regular staff meetings to reinforce service policy. The applicant said cold-storage and bonded manufacturing areas remain inaccessible to patrons and that the firm plans locked storage for any additional beverage inventory.

The board moved and unanimously approved the new brewpub license; members cited Twisted Pine’s long local history, community involvement and mitigation steps to prevent service to minors.
