Boulder BLA approves Twisted Pine’s brewpub license after local petitioning shows support

Twisted Pine Brewing Company (Timberline) received a new brewpub license for a Walnut Street location after an Oedipus petition survey found strong business and resident support.
The City of Boulder Beverage Licensing Authority on May 21 approved a new brewpub-type liquor license for Twisted Pine Brewing Company, which will operate as Timberline Brewing at 3201 Walnut St., Unit A.
Robert (Bob) Bail, a 42 percent owner and proposed registered manager, told the board Twisted Pine has been in business since 1995 and has operated at locations near the proposed site for decades. He said the company does not plan to change hours, seating or perform premises modifications; staff will continue to be TIPS-trained and the service model requires patrons to order at the bar and pick up food at a station.
"All of our employees are required to be TIPS-trained within 30 days of acceptance of employment," Bail said.
Oedipus Petitioning, engaged by the applicant, surveyed a designated area bounded roughly by Valmont (north), Arapahoe (south) and Folsom/50th (east/west) and contacted 316 potential addresses. Petitioners made contact with 194 people: 25 declined to participate, one was neutral and 40 were not qualified to sign. Of the remaining participants, 126 signatures favored issuance (104 businesses and 22 residents). One business opposed; one signature was later deleted as illegible.
Petitioning lead Erin McCullough told the board that, despite a minor application-name typo on some paperwork, respondents understood which business the petition concerned and that support was "extremely positive." The board discussed the firm's service model, on-site storage and prior compliance history; Bail said Twisted Pine's only prior enforcement action dated back more than a decade and that the responsible employee was dismissed at the time.
Why it matters: The change to a brewpub license will allow Twisted Pine to expand on-premise beverage offerings (the applicant said it will initially emphasize offering wine in addition to its beer) without changing hours or the physical premises. The board approved the application by unanimous vote.
The clerk will issue the license and post the approval to the City of Boulder website.
