Leadership coaches highlight data-driven strategies, MTSS and AP expansion in academic spotlight

The Gilbert Unified District governing board heard an academic-spotlight presentation on May 20 about leadership coaching, multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), and district data tools.
Thea Hansen (elementary leadership coach) and Tim Cannon (secondary leadership coach) described their roles supporting new and veteran administrators, conducting learning walks, and helping campuses use data (Tableau, FastBridge, Illuminate) to drive instruction and interventions. Hansen described districtwide MTSS work at the elementary level, including three-site visits this year, a planned MTSS handbook revision and master-schedule work to ensure students access services.
Cannon illustrated how regular "impact checks" (every 45 days) keep campuses focused on goals and action steps. He related a story about a college- and career counselor who was "tactfully relentless" in supporting students; the counselor's work led 26 students who were not planning to attend college to earn full scholarships, Cannon said. Cannon also noted expansion of rigorous-course participation: "When we first started this, about 40% of our kids were taking core courses. Today, over 70% of our kids are taking core courses," and AP enrollment rose from about 1,400 students to 5,454 since 2018, he said.
Board members asked for more MTSS data, and administrators said they would provide enrollment and tiered-support numbers on request. Hansen and Cannon emphasized that data are useful only if schools act on it; they highlighted site improvement-plan work and a continuous-improvement process with feedback to campuses.
