County administrator reports uncertainty as Minnesota special session looms; county program aid cuts back on the table

Olmsted County Administrator Travis Grama updated the Board on the state legislative situation, saying that Governor Tim Walz is expected to call a special session once budget bills reach final agreement and that working groups are functioning like conference committees and may hold public hearings.
Grama said caucus leaders set an internal deadline for committee chairs to reach agreement by 5 p.m. the following day; he cautioned there was still much uncertainty. He also reported that county program aid cuts — which had earlier been thought off the table — were back under consideration as of about 4:15 p.m. that day, a development he said county leaders are watching closely because of local budget impacts.
Grama added that some county projects remain under consideration for inclusion in a state bonding bill but that outcomes are not yet known. He said county staff and commissioners will continue to monitor and share updates with the community.
