Board recognizes DECA competitors, music ensemble, valedictorians and retiring coach

The L'Anse Creuse Board of Education opened its May 19 meeting with presentations celebrating student achievement across the district, honoring musical, academic and leadership accomplishments and recognizing a retiring teacher and coach.
Superintendent Howell introduced a saxophone quartet from L'Anse Creuse High School that had been selected to perform at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association Spring Honors Festival; the quartet was one of only a few district ensembles selected statewide. The board applauded the musicians and presented certificates.
Members of the district’s DECA chapters also were recognized. District presenters noted that students from both high schools advanced to state competitions in Detroit and that several qualified for the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando. Jacob Combs, who identified himself as DECA president at L'Anse Creuse High School North, and chapter advisors and student leaders spoke about competitive placements, leadership academies and college acceptances of senior members.
The board also recognized valedictorians and salutatorians and noted four graduating seniors who have made military commitments; one student was acknowledged for committing to the U.S. Marine Corps. Don Roda, a longtime teacher and coach retiring after more than three decades in the district and recently inducted into the Macomb County Coaches Hall of Fame, received formal recognition from the board.
Speakers at the presentations included classroom staff and chapter representatives; board members used the time to commend teachers, coaches and students for the school year’s accomplishments. The presentations closed with applause and photo opportunities; no formal board action was associated with the recognitions.
