Carlsbad Parks and Recreation reports strong spring participation; Meals on Wheels San Diego County takes over nutrition services

Recreation Services Manager Ashley Benson told commissioners the Agua Hedionda (Aganorpe) Aquatic Center Pirate Plunge in March drew nearly 400 attendees and that the Poinsettia Community Park “extravaganza” on April 19 had over 3,000 attendees. Benson said the Hot Rods and Cool Treats event on May 10 had about 800 attendees and that the Friends of Carrillo Ranch’s Fiesta at the Rancho supports a program that brings approximately 1,200 fourth graders through a California history program.
On nutrition services, Benson said the department began a new agreement with Meals on Wheels San Diego County on April 1 and that the transition was “a fairly seamless transition” with no interruption to congregate meals or home meal delivery.
Benson reviewed other youth and senior offerings: the Pine Avenue spring-break kids camp (about 30 participants), stage programs and special events including CPR demonstrations at pools during Water Safety Month, a sold-out creative cuisine cooking class at the Carlsbad Senior Center on April 28, and a volunteer-led park cleanup organized by the department’s leadership and training program.
The department announced summer recreation programs begin Monday, June 9, and a volunteer appreciation brunch scheduled June 1 at The Crossings. Commissioners asked for more context on attendance figures; Commissioner Knight requested year-over-year comparisons going forward so the commission can track whether event attendance is growing or declining.
