Summer Creek parents ask Humble ISD to publish rules for state-championship celebrations

HUMBLE — Parents of Summer Creek High School's girls basketball team urged the Humble ISD board to adopt published, transparent protocols for district-level championship celebrations after saying the team received little recognition compared with other state champions.
Christy Lewis, who identified herself as a parent, told the board the Summer Creek girls won a Class 6A Division 1 state title in March and that the district provided no billboard, parade or timely celebration. "Our girls got nothing from Humble ISD," Lewis said. She asked the board to acknowledge the team's achievement more visibly and promptly.
Robin Martin, who said she spoke on behalf of herself and her daughter, asked the board to direct the administration to publish clear rules covering "who, what, when, where, why and how" district-level celebration resources are released. "There is no way to understand who, what, when, where, why, how to call to unlock the district level resources," Martin said. She proposed staff training so campus athletic staff know when district resources can be requested.
Tracy Robinson, another parent, said the Summer Creek family felt like an "afterthought" when celebrations were denied and then rapidly scheduled for other teams. Robinson said the parents had offered to fund a celebration and were refused. "That may not even be the case, but that's how it felt," she said.
Board members acknowledged the speakers and thanked them for respectful testimony. Trustee comments during later board discussion repeatedly congratulated student athletes across the district and said the board would focus on supporting students. The board did not take immediate formal action on celebration protocols; staff were not directed to adopt a policy at the meeting. Martin specifically requested that the board "direct the administration to publish those rules publicly," but the record shows no formal motion to require that step at this meeting.
Speakers and trustees framed the issue as one of transparency and consistency rather than a single-person grievance; speakers repeatedly asked for a written protocol to avoid the appearance of impropriety.
