White Oak roundabout construction starts; major closure of adjacent roads set to begin June 16

Engineering Director Leah Harrison said the contractor began construction on May 19. The work is organized into three phases: a roughly one-month Phase 1 working mostly off the roadway; Phase 2, the main construction phase, will require closures of Ackerman Road and Hebron Church Road at the roundabout approaches while maintaining through traffic on White Oak Road; and Phase 3 will open the roundabout and complete the east side of White Oak Road with less impact to moving traffic. Harrison said Phase 2 road closures are scheduled to begin June 16 and are estimated to last three to four months; phase 3 is estimated to follow and last about three months.
Harrison described the town's outreach and traffic management plans: mailed postcards to residents within a half-mile, e-news traffic alerts, a dedicated project website and coordination with Wake County Public Schools on bus routing. Detour routes will rely primarily on Bryan Road, New Bethel Church Road, Clifford Road and Benson Road; the town will place field signage for detours and monitor intersection performance at key locations such as the Bryan Road/White Oak Road intersection. Harrison said the team is discussing temporary measures with NCDOT traffic services, including the possibility of a temporary traffic signal, if detour intersections show congestion or safety problems.
Harrison emphasized that property access will be maintained during construction and that staff timed the main closure to begin after the school year to reduce impacts on buses. She said the town will monitor detour conditions and make adjustments as needed.
