SPAN Meals on Wheels thanks Denton County, cites federal grant work and transportation expansion plans

Michelle McMahon, executive director of SPAN Meals on Wheels of Denton County, told the Denton County Commissioners Court on June 10 that the nonprofit will move quickly to use a recently approved county agreement to pursue federal grant funds and expand transportation services.
"Last week, you all approved an agreement with SPAN to allow us to seek federal grant funds to help us fulfill the needs of an ever growing population in Denton County," McMahon said. "This was a huge step for SPAN ... We are moving as quickly as we can to increase our transportation opportunities and we look forward to spreading the word throughout the community about our growth."
McMahon said building a larger driver pool and expanding the vehicle fleet will take time but that staff are actively taking steps forward. She thanked county staff Brooke Hanbrook and Capricia Willis for assistance and said SPAN will report regularly on progress. "It will take a bit of time to build up our driver pool and our fleet but we are actively taking steps in the right direction and will report back regularly on our progress," she said.
Judge Eads and multiple commissioners responded with appreciation for SPAN's work. The county did not take additional action on the presentation during the June 10 meeting; McMahon described a prior agreement that allows SPAN to seek federal grants but no new motion or vote was recorded on the floor during public comment.
The presentation emphasized services targeted to seniors, veterans and people with disabilities and noted SPAN's 51-year history in Denton County. McMahon described the initiative as an "exciting development in the history of our organization" and thanked county leaders for their support.
The county's formal budget and procurement approvals that appear elsewhere on the June 10 agenda may affect how nonprofits such as SPAN access county resources; McMahon specifically credited county staff who helped secure the earlier agreement enabling federal grant applications.
