Board approves letter of support for $5 million earmark to plan F‑35 maintenance hangar at NAS Lemoore

Kings County authorized the chair to sign letters of support for a congressional earmark request of $5,000,000 to fund planning and design for an F‑35 aircraft maintenance hangar addition at Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore.
Alex C. Walker, Administrative Analyst, presented the request and said the measure would support planning and design for a hangar addition that would provide tactical support infrastructure—taxiways, operational storage, flight-line security, fencing, road extensions and parking—to support F‑35C operations. Walker described NAS Lemoore as the Navy’s only West Coast master jet base and the largest master jet base in the Navy, hosting important strike fighter squadrons.
A member of the public asked whether the county was funding the $5 million; Walker clarified the county is only authorizing a letter of support for a federal earmark and is not committing county funds. Walker noted the earmark is part of a competitive congressional process and is not guaranteed.
Paragon Government Relations, the county’s federal lobbyist, will assist staff with distribution of the letters. The board approved the letters of support on roll-call vote.
