Board reaffirms support for LGBTQIA+ students with unanimous resolution

The Santa Rosa City Schools Board unanimously adopted a resolution on May 28 reaffirming the district's support for LGBTQIA+ students, including transgender, nonbinary and gender‑expansive youth.
Parent and community advocate Sheyna Kirk introduced the resolution and framed the measure as timely in light of legislative and media activity statewide. "Students who experience a more safe and inclusive environment undoubtedly have better learning outcomes and enjoy improved mental health," Kirk said.
Interim superintendent Lisa August and board members described the resolution as paired with implementation actions: continued review of student information systems, flag displays at schools, and written policies that support student needs. Trustee Dela Torre asked the district to increase visible community presence at events (for example, local Pride events) so families can see the district's public support.
The board voted by roll call with student member Omay Zuniga and all trustees recorded as aye. Trustee Kirby was noted absent for that vote.
Trustees said the resolution reflects existing policy and a commitment to ongoing action; staff will follow up on implementation steps identified in the presentation.
