The Santa Rosa City Schools Board on May 28 approved a revised vice‑principal job description and two new district job descriptions after trustees and labor representatives debated scope, site delegation, and funding sources.
Trustee Christine Kirby moved an amendment to the vice‑principal job description to explicitly add language to "assist the principal in implementing the district mission, vision, and strategic plan." The board approved the amended F8 job description by roll call after staff explained the change aligns co‑administrator duties with principal responsibilities. The board and staff discussed how principals will assign duties among co‑administrators at large campuses and whether district guidance or site‑level discretion is the better practice.
Separately, the board approved the job description for "Director of School Innovation, Engagement and Strategic Outreach" (F12) by roll call; the item passed 6‑1 with Trustee De La Torre voting no. Staff described that position as largely grant‑funded (approximately 20% from LCAP, 80% from A‑G/other restricted funds) and focused on outreach to feeder schools, recruitment for specialized programs, and enrollment strategies to grow ADA. Trustees asked for measurable enrollment and outreach metrics and committted to quarterly reporting so the board can evaluate fiscal impact and whether the position increases attendance and revenue.
Trustees also approved a combined coordinator position for multilingual and equitable services (F14). Discussion that preceded F12–F14 included SRTA and CSEA public remarks earlier in the meeting objecting to adding or expanding administrative layers while the district is implementing a fiscal stabilization plan and making cuts to some site positions. CSEA and SRTA leaders asked the board to prioritize student‑facing positions and cautioned against using LCAP and grant funds to fund new administrator roles that could undermine the district's stabilization plan.
Trustees and staff emphasized the funding sources for the new positions differ (some fully restricted federal/state grants such as Title I/II/III and a‑g funds), and staff said the new roles are temporary while grant funding is available. Several trustees asked staff to coordinate outreach with labor partners before future similar hires and to provide measurable metrics (quarterly enrollment/delta reporting) to evaluate whether the positions achieve stated goals.
Roll calls on the items: - F8 (vice‑principal job description, as amended): passed (all aye). - F12 (Director of School Innovation, Engagement and Strategic Outreach): passed (6 ayes, 1 no by Trustee De La Torre). - F14 (Coordinator, Multilingual and Equitable Services): passed (unanimous).
Trustees said they supported building internal leadership capacity, but several urged clearer district guidance so site‑level delegation of duties does not produce inconsistent practices across campuses.
