Council approves 5% merit increase for city administrator; staff reports $2.49 million seismic grant for fire station

The North Bend City Council on May 27 approved a contract amendment providing a 5% merit increase to the city administrator’s salary effective July 1, 2025. The council moved and seconded the amendment following staff’s presentation of peer-salary data and a note that the recommended increase was already included in the budget approved by the budget committee.
During the city administrator’s report, staff announced a $2,493,090 grant award from the State of Oregon for seismic upgrades to the city’s fire station. Staff said the grant covers the project without a local match and credited multi-year efforts by city staff and consultants to secure the funding.
Staff described likely work required for seismic retrofits, including reinforcing bay areas, upgrading foundation pilings and improving building connections so the structure performs better in seismic events. Councilors and staff discussed how the grant would allow needed seismic and infrastructure repairs without local matching funds.
Councilor Johns moved the contract amendment and Councilor Hamilton seconded; the council voted to approve the merit increase. Staff said the increase was included in the fiscal-year budget and that the COLA for non-represented employees would apply in addition to the merit increase.
