The Metuchen Board of Education’s policy committee reviewed its regulation on student tardiness and its policy‑review process at the May 27 board meeting, including how parent notification is handled before disciplinary consequences and how external policy updates are evaluated.
Dr. Spigner reported that the committee discussed when parents are alerted about their child’s tardiness and how causes of lateness can differ by grade level. The committee asked administration follow‑up questions before those practices are finalized for inclusion in the student handbook.
The committee also met with the district collaborative committee, represented by Miss Paredes, to go over how alerts from Strauss SMA (referred to in the meeting as "policy source") are evaluated and how the committee recommends implementation practices. The committee reviewed examples such as the spectator code of conduct and disposition of property to illustrate how policy review ties to implementation guidance.
Dr. Spigner said the committee will continue to collect information and expects additional discussion before any regulatory language is adopted in the handbook. The May 27 report did not include a board vote to adopt the handbook changes; the committee intends further review.
