Metuchen equity committee begins work on calendar observances and food‑equity partnerships

The Metuchen Board of Education’s equity committee reported at the May 27 meeting that it has started discussions about how calendar observances are recognized across the district and has opened a conversation about food equity and local partnerships to address food insecurity.
Committee chair Mister Botte said the group met May 20 and had three main discussions: how to support district stakeholders regarding calendar and observances; broadening the district’s definition of equity to include issues like food insecurity; and brainstorming topics for the next school year. The committee has begun conversations with leadership at a local food pantry about possible creative partnerships.
"We opened up a discussion, embracing sort of how we've defined equity in the district as all encompassing as possible, to discuss food equity and food insecurity and an opportunity to do some creative partnerships locally," Mister Botte said.
The committee said it plans to meet again in mid‑June (the committee referenced June 17 or 18) to continue planning and to finalize topics for the coming school year. The report did not include binding policy changes or budget allocations; next steps will be committee work and possible recommendations to the full board.
