Students present Pollinator Corridor project; city and volunteers supported installation at American Legion Park

Students from Hilder Pearson Elementary presented the Poulsbo Pollinator Project at the May 21 council meeting, describing a student‑led effort that installed a pollinator corridor at American Legion Park and planning expansions to other parks.

Principal Craig Frick and student leaders Hunter Bogue, Cal Gist and Ryker Jones explained the classroom and field work that led to last year’s planting and described plans for expanded installations, fundraising and community outreach. The students said they planted native species, added four mason bee houses and worked with vendors Crown Bees, Salish Tree and Valley Nursery, along with Poulsbo Parks & Recreation, to secure plants and supplies.

Why it matters: The project combines hands‑on STEM education with city parks work, adds native vegetation that supports bees and other pollinators, and includes fundraising and volunteer engagement. Students showed sticker artwork they plan to sell to support future plantings.

Details: The students described native plants used and recommended for the local area (for example, Pacific rhododendron, Oregon grape, camas and serviceberry), explained the concept of a pollinator corridor and said about 25 students are involved in the multi‑year effort. The project team said it would seek business sponsors, volunteers and sale opportunities (farmers market and local businesses) for student‑designed stickers to raise funds.

Council members praised the students; the police department presented each student with a department coin in appreciation.
