Council approves limited reroute of Clayhead Trail with Nature Conservancy on Whitman property

The New Shoreham Town Council voted Wednesday to authorize a limited pedestrian reroute of Clayhead Trail across Plat 2, Lot 24 (the Whitman property), in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy.
Town staff and Nature Conservancy representative Charlotte explained the trail had become dangerously close to a bluff edge and that a short realignment across the Whitman parcel would preserve access while improving safety. "Given that the trail is now dangerously close to the edge, it seems to be one of the only ways to preserve the continuity of this really critical piece," the town manager told the council when introducing the item.
The council reviewed the deed for the Whitman parcel and concluded a limited walking path would not be inconsistent with the property's conservation terms. The council voted to approve the reroute and authorized the town manager to coordinate implementation with The Nature Conservancy and property stewards.
