Mendocino County commissioners voted to approve updated classification specifications for two positions in the sheriff's office, renaming them and reclassifying current incumbents.
The Board approved renaming the sheriff evidence unit supervisor to Sheriff Property Room Supervisor and changing the title Sheriff Evidence Technician to Sheriff Property Room Technician, and approved reclassification of all incumbents in those positions. County staff said the updates were intended to more accurately reflect the work and scope performed in the property room.
Human Resources staff described edits that remove duties no longer performed by the property-room staff, including responding to major crime scenes, fingerprinting and photography. The draft also eliminates the field evidence school as a minimum qualification for the revised classifications.
"It's just not things that they've done for numerous years. Cindy typically does that type of scene response. It requires a lot of updated and and recurring training to to happen to be able to respond out to the scene, have that knowledge," Lieutenant James Elmore of the Sheriff's Office said during the meeting.
The motion to approve the classification specification changes was made during the meeting, amended to explicitly include reclassification of incumbents, and seconded. The Board took a roll-call vote and recorded three ayes; no no votes or abstentions were recorded in the transcript. The motion was approved.
Commissioners and staff also noted minor typographical errors in the proposed final drafts and identified an errant bullet point under the examples of duty and essential job functions, which participants said would be corrected in the final document. No public comments were recorded for this item.
The Board then moved to the Human Resources Director report.
