Tavares council reappoints library and planning board members, appoints mayor to canvassing board

The Tavares City Council on June 4 approved reappointments to the city’s library board and planning and zoning board, and appointed Mayor Price to serve on the canvassing board for the November 2025 municipal election.
For the Library Advisory Board the council reappointed Kathy Suresnick, George Cook, Ren Healy and Lawrence Ross to two-year terms running June 2025 through June 2027. Kathy Suresnick spoke briefly in support of her reappointment.
For the Planning and Zoning Board the council reappointed Brooke Matthews, Bruce Peterman, Drew Sweezy and Derek Treadwell to three-year terms running June 2025 through June 2028; one seat on the planning board remains vacant and staff said the vacancy is advertised online for additional applicants.
Council also discussed the canvassing board membership required by elections procedures. Only three qualifying members exist for that board, two of whom were not present; the council appointed Mayor Price to serve on the canvassing board for the November 4, 2025 election. The council discussed whether to name an alternate and staff said they would follow up with the supervisor of elections to determine whether an alternate appointment is needed.
All reappointments and the canvassing board appointment were approved by voice votes at the meeting; the minutes reflect voice affirmation rather than a roll-call tally.
