Fairfield Union Local board approves teacher hire, multiple staff contracts and supplemental assignments

The Fairfield Union Local Board of Education on June 9 approved personnel actions including a one-year contract for a returning high school social studies teacher and multiple support-staff contracts and supplemental assignments.
Superintendent Belvoir introduced Travis Kearns for a one-year contract as the high school social studies teacher on the master's-degree salary schedule, step 19, for 2025—26, pending verification of application materials. Belvoir and district administrator Shaffer praised Kearns— prior experience and AP teaching record. Kearns told the board he was "excited to be back" and thanked administrators for the opportunity. The motion to approve the contract passed on a unanimous roll-call vote (mover: Mr. Smeltzer; second: Ms. Johns).
The board also approved an adjustment to Christopher Turner—s position on the teacher salary schedule (move from step 19 to step 20 after verifying prior experience) and accepted the resignation of Melanie Toronto as a Bremen Elementary aide, effective May 30, 2025.
For support staff, the board approved a one-year support-service contract for Benjamin Miller as a Bremen Elementary aide (salary schedule 1, step 1) for 2025—26, pending verification, and a one-year support-service contract for Cody Campbell as an assistant maintenance employee, effective June 9, 2025. Both motions passed unanimously.
The board approved a request for one and one-half days leave without pay for Holly Culver (May 5 and a half day on May 21, 2025) for medical reasons. The board also approved the substitute classified list, volunteers (13 named volunteers), and personal service supplemental contracts (summer and fall supplements numbered 1—42 as presented), each by unanimous roll-call votes.
Superintendent Belvoir and administrators praised new hires and returning staff. Shaffer said the district felt Kearns was "the perfect fit" and described administrative confidence in his impact on the department and students.
