Cemetery director Karen told the Waukesha City Cemetery Commission on June 9 that several maintenance projects are beginning this month and that staff will follow up with a resident about a problem at a gravesite.
A member of the public, Yolanda Medina, raised a concern during public comment about turf conditions at her husband’s plot in Section 14. Karen said staff would follow up, noting the tree that had previously affected the plot has been removed and that resodding work is planned in the coming weeks: “I can talk to Ken tomorrow about resodding it, because we are doing sodding now in the next few weeks,” she said.
Karen reported the autumn garden fountain replacement is scheduled to begin the next day with an expected completion around June 20. The Cemetery Chapel Building is getting a new HVAC system; work begins this week and will require relocation of office staff to City Hall for an estimated three to four weeks while ductwork and two HVAC zones are replaced. Karen said the chapel will not be available for rentals during the HVAC project.
Other items in the director’s report: work on a CIP submission for July, an RFP under preparation for tuckpointing on the administration building, security cameras on a pending list, and receipt of replacement equipment (a gator and mower) that were on the capital plan. Seasonal staff have started work for the summer.
Karen and commissioners also discussed fundraising by the Friends of Prairie Home Cemetery: a recent Taco John’s fundraiser brought in close to $500 and the Friends are planning a second annual Tombstone Trot on Sunday, Oct. 19. The Friends recently updated bylaws to operate as a membership organization and are a 501(c)(3); new brochures are at the printer.
Commissioners discussed a proposal to permit naming or sponsorship of smaller side roads within the cemetery as a fundraiser. The commission agreed to make a referral to investigate legal and administrative constraints and to return the item as an agenda item for a future meeting.
