The Waukesha City Cemetery Commission on June 9 unanimously approved placement of a granite monument and solar‑lit flagpoles in two veteran areas at Prairie Home Cemetery.
The commission voted to allow a monument in a veterans portion of Section 8 and an additional solar‑lit flagpole in Section P. Amanda Roddy moved the motion and Terry Tim seconded; the measure passed unanimously.
The proposal, brought by the Friends of Prairie Home Cemetery, calls for a granite monument that stands about 4 feet tall and two flagpoles likely about 20 feet each; the commission noted a 30‑foot flagpole already stands at the chapel entrance. Cemetery staff said the group has agreed to fund the monument, the flagpoles, solar lighting and flags.
Karen, cemetery director, described the lighting technology as improved and durable: “the technology for that has, improved greatly. It should be lasting years,” she said. Karen also said staff will work with the Friends to develop a placement and design plan.
Commissioner Mike Christine, representing a volunteer group that has previously worked on cemetery improvements, told the commission his volunteers would assist where practical: “we, if willing, we would be really glad to help with what we can,” he said.
Commission members discussed siting relative to an existing arbor and areas where military honors are conducted. No city funding was requested; the Friends of Prairie Home Cemetery have already voted to provide the money for the monument, poles and lighting.
The commission directed staff to continue coordinating with the Friends on final design and placement and returned the item to regular maintenance and permitting processes.
