Council moves to dissolve Economic Development Commission and shift functions to staff

The Pacific Grove City Council voted June 4 to repeal the municipal code chapter establishing the Economic Development Commission (EDC), moving the city’s economic‑development functions to staff.
City Manager Matt Mogensen told the council the mayor made appointments in January but the commission quickly lost members and struggled to convene a quorum; three meetings were canceled since January. Separately, staff shifted responsibilities to a newly assigned economic‑development staff member. Mogensen said the council previously directed staff to evaluate whether a staffed position would provide greater impact and recommended sunsetting the commission after the staffing change.
A member of the EDC, who addressed the council, asked that the commission be allowed to meet further before dissolution. The council majority said the duties are now being performed by staff and that stakeholders and the business community can continue to provide input through staff and existing business organizations such as the Chamber and BID.
The council approved an ordinance to repeal chapter 3.4 of the Pacific Grove Municipal Code (Economic Development Commission) and authorized associated actions; the motion passed unanimously.
