Block party draws thousands; BID and partners outline summer events and gazebo funding

Organizers told the BID board that last week's downtown block party drew an estimated 5,500 attendees and marked the kickoff of the 20th anniversary season of Music on Main.

Leaders from the Downtown West Bend Association and The Bend credited the city, sponsors and law enforcement for the event's safety and success. The association reported broad sponsor support and attendance comparable to last year's event.

The Farmers Market has begun its season and organizers said the newly repainted stall numbers have helped vendors and customers. Global Fest, a new two-day cultural festival supported by a city major events grant, is scheduled for the end of June and will feature performances, food and artisans representing more than 30 nations.

On the gazebo that was damaged earlier this year, staff reported that insurance proceeds and private donations will not fully cover replacement costs. Private donors TRS Property Management and Murphy & Proctor, among others, agreed to help pay toward replacement; organizers said there will be sponsor signage acknowledging those contributions.

The board also discussed several other summer and fall events, including tribute concerts, comedy nights and partnerships with youth and library programs. Staff said they will provide updated event budgets and a three-year strategic marketing roadmap ahead of the August–September budget process.

Board and association leaders asked staff to return with more detailed cost estimates for Christmas decorations, expansion of hanging baskets beyond Main Street, and potential reallocation of leftover funds from holiday spending to summer enhancements.
