On April 19, officers from the Tacoma Police Department rescued a frightened dog stranded on rocks along the shoreline at Chinese Reconciliation Park after a passerby heard barking and alerted police.
According to the broadcast, officers used a tarp to hoist the dog to safety. The dog was taken to a local animal shelter and later reunited with its family.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said it will send the Tacoma Police Department a Compassionate Police Department award in recognition of the officer’s “kindness and determination” during the rescue. PETA president Ingrid Newkirk told the program that PETA encourages “everyone to follow their example by taking immediate action whenever they see an animal in need.” The organization will send a framed certificate and vegan chocolates as part of the award.
The segment described the rescue as a prompt, field response by officers and emphasized the outcome—reuniting the dog with its family. No internal disciplinary, policy change, or formal departmental action beyond the award announcement was reported during the broadcast.
