Council hears updates on diagonal parking, a mobile pickleball access app and proposed fiber provider

Council members received multiple verbal reports during the meeting on local public‑works and community technology items.

Diagonal parking: Staff reported complaints about hazardous conditions on D Street between Third and Yosemite and said city crews restriped one block to create diagonal parking on one side of the street and parallel parking on the other. Staff said the geometric change increased usable spaces in that block and suggested the council consider extending the treatment to the next block.

Pickleball courts access/reservation: Staff described plans to pilot a mobile-access system that would allow players to unlock pickleball courts with a smartphone (similar to hotel door access), intended to reduce staff time spent issuing keys and to track court use. Council members and frequent players cautioned that reservation systems can be problematic; one council member said reservations can be monopolized by a small group and urged preserving walk‑in access for youth and casual users. Staff said the current item was an update on access technology rather than a finalized reservation policy.

Unwired fiber provider: Staff reported that Unwired, a fiber‑optic Internet provider, contacted the city offering to install fiber infrastructure at their own cost across the city and requested council approval to proceed with permitting and easement coordination. Staff said the company would pull permits and handle easements; a council item will return with details and possible authorization at a future meeting.
