Fairfax police report declines in several major crimes, cite rising shoplifting and steady recruiting gains

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis told the Safety and Security Committee on May 20 that several major crime categories fell in 2024 from 2023 even as the department is tracking a significant countywide rise in shoplifting.
Davis said homicides fell from 23 in 2022 to 17 in 2023 and to 14 in 2024, and that “in calendar year 2024, just like calendar year 2023, we closed 100% of our homicide investigations with arrests.” He credited detectives and the Victim Services Division for the clearance rate. Motor-vehicle thefts were down nearly 20% in 2024 versus 2023, and aggravated assaults declined about 4.2% year over year, Davis said. Robberies rose slightly in 2024 (about 1.1%), driven primarily by robberies of persons, but early 2025 data showed year-to-date reductions in robberies after a strong first-quarter decline.
