Souderton board approves consent agenda; public commenters ask for more attachments, recordings and community input

The Souderton Area School District Board of Directors voted to approve the consent action agenda (items 8.2–8.25) at its May 22 monthly meeting. The motion to approve the consent action items carried after one board member announced an abstention on two personnel‑related items because of a family conflict.

The consent action agenda as presented included routine approvals: board meeting minutes; financial statements and check listings; conference attendance and overnight field trip requests; personnel actions; appointment of the school board treasurer and secretary; approval of a new school club at Indian Valley Middle School; Act 80 days; revisions to ESL curriculum; third reading and final adoption of Policy 916 and Policy 807; first reading of Policies 805 (emergency preparedness) and 806 (child abuse); a donation to the food service department; a tax assessment appeals stipulation; approval of the 2025‑26 North Montco Technical Career Center budget; approval of the 2025‑26 special education shared services plan with the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit; and approval of a confidential settlement and release.

A board member stated they would abstain from items 8.10 and 8.11, citing a family member’s employment at a district summer camp; the transcript does not identify the board member by name for that abstention.

Public commenters raised several procedural and policy concerns before the board took action. At the start of the public comment period, a resident flagged missing attachments on several consent items and asked that draft documents be provided before votes. Corinne DeJazzo (Upper Salford) praised the board’s support for diversity, equity and inclusion and thanked the board for allowing three teachers to attend the Pennsylvania Conference for Women.

Alex Wisser (Upper Salford Township) urged the board to allow the policy committee to review two policies — Policy 805 (emergency preparedness) and Policy 806 (child abuse) — rather than introducing them directly for first reading at the action meeting. In response, a district official said the policies were introduced that night for board consideration and would be placed on next month’s policy committee agenda for discussion.

During the meeting Dr. Gallagher (district leadership) reported that the district had received an $11,900 donation from Giant Foods to clear outstanding student meal debt, and that construction projects at Southford Hills, West Broad Street and Indian Crest have begun and are on schedule despite heavy rain. The superintendent also noted there are about 10 school days remaining in the academic year and reminded the public that graduation is Monday, June 9.

Other public comments called for indefinite archival of meeting recordings to improve transparency and for the board to accept community comment prior to action meetings so submitted remarks could be part of public dialogue. One commenter requested the district create a communications role to improve outreach, update the website and manage social media.

After discussion, the board approved the consent action agenda. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn that passed unanimously.

No votes or board action were recorded during the meeting to change the district’s broadcasting or public comment policies; commenters’ proposals were requests for future policy changes or practice adjustments.
