During a special segment presented at the board meeting, coach Anthony Pace highlighted Smith’s season‑long achievements: district meet records in all three jumping events, a new school high jump record, seven school records overall, and undefeated results across the season’s events. Pace said Smith “has all six jumping records, all three indoor and all three outdoor.”
Destiny Smith told the board she began competing in first grade, developed as a high jumper in ninth grade and later expanded to triple and long jump and sprints after moving to the district. Smith said her most meaningful accomplishment was winning a national title indoors this year. “I know what I can do. I just gotta do it. And I did it,” Smith said.
Smith confirmed she will attend Kansas State University, saying she chose the program because of the coaching staff and the support she felt from the coaches. She listed other schools she considered, including UCF, Arizona State, TCU, SMU and Penn State.
The spotlight included mention of district team accomplishments: girls’ track won the District 1 championship for the first time in school history, and the district is sending a combined 13 athletes to states. The board and audience applauded Smith and the girls’ team.
