Commissioners approve list of 21 surplus vehicles for auction, discuss reallocation for landfill

Buddy Romrell, assistant director of Public Works, presented a list of surplus fleet vehicles, equipment and miscellaneous items the county wishes to auction. He said the list contains 21 cars and trucks, several sets of old tires, saws, tanks, and other roadside shop items. One BMW from asset forfeiture lacks a clear title and will be held; other asset-forfeiture proceeds will be routed to the sheriff's asset-forfeiture account.
Romrell said some vehicles are candidates for reallocation rather than sale, including a half-ton GMC from juvenile probation with about 85,000 miles that could be used at the landfill even though it is older. Commissioners discussed the trade-off between replacing equipment on a shorter lifecycle (e.g., five-year replacement plans) and getting more utility from older vehicles by letting them “go die” in heavy-use settings like the landfill. Commissioners asked Romrell to estimate expected auction proceeds and to target summer auction timing to maximize bids.
The board approved the list to send to auction by motion and voice vote ("Aye"). Romrell said proceeds will go to the general fund except asset-forfeiture receipts, which will go to the sheriff's forfeiture account. Commissioners asked Romrell to provide an estimated revenue range for the auction proceeds at a future briefing before final disposition.
