City approval clears the way for a mixed-phase project that project proponents said will increase the supply of affordable housing in a neighborhood targeted for reinvestment.
Brinshore Development representative Bill Ducash outlined the proposal to the council, saying the preliminary plat covers two developments: Southside Terrace Phase 3, a 113-unit development with units ranging from one to seven bedrooms, and Southside Terrace Senior, a 42-unit building of one- and two-bedroom homes. Ducash said 87 units in Phase 3 are designated affordable, and 55 of those will be supported by project-based vouchers provided by the Omaha Housing Authority. "It's a great development. It furthers affordable housing in Omaha and just housing in general in Omaha," Ducash said.
Joanie Balk of the Omaha Housing Authority appeared for the applicant and offered to answer council questions. Planning staff and the Planning Board recommended approval of the preliminary plat.
Council action followed public hearings and the council approved the motion by roll call vote: Councilmember Begley — yes; Councilmember Hugg — yes; Councilmember Johnson — yes; Councilmember Roe — yes; President Harding — yes. The motion passed 5 to 0.
