County begins RMP amendment scoping; commissioners back rescinding conservation-as-multiple-use rule

At the Oct. 8 meeting, Sweetwater County land use staff said the Bureau of Land Management's Resource Management Plan (RMP) amendment scoping period opened Oct. 3 and runs for 30 days. Staff said the county is preparing scoping comments and that the RMP amendment will be a year-long process.
Eric said the county's commissioners recently signed a letter supporting rescission of a conservation rule that had allowed "conservation as a multiple use" under the federal planning framework. Eric told the commission that county staff view the rescission as desirable because treating conservation as a multiple use in federal plans had created conflicts with state and governor-level sage grouse policy; rescission, he said, would remove that source of conflict during the RMP amendment process.
Staff noted the rescission and the RMP amendment are both subject to public comment periods; the transcript records that the county's letter in support of rescission was sent and that the rescission itself is under a 30-day comment period.
