District to renew network support under E-Rate and rewire multiple schools using federal/state funds

Moore County Schools' technology staff reported two recommended procurements to maintain and upgrade network infrastructure, using federal E-Rate Category 2 funding and state connectivity support.
Network manager Kent Eklund said the first item is a renewal of support and licensing for switches, routers, wireless access points and management software. "This is to maintain and renew our support and licensing agreements for the hundreds of switches, routers, wireless access points, and the backend management software we have for the network," Eklund said, describing a total vendor cost of $127,645.65 from CDW-G.
The second project is category-2 cabling and wiring upgrades at West End, Sandhills Farm Life (appears as "Sam[e]ls Farm Life" in materials), Vass Lakeview and Westmore Elementary. Eklund said the work will replace classroom-mounted wiring and copper runs with proper cabling and eliminate noisy cabinet-mounted switches in classrooms. He reported a total project cost of $276,240.22.
Eklund said both procurements are covered 80% by FCC E-Rate Category 2 funding, with the district's 20% portion expected to be covered through the North Carolina School Connectivity Initiative (the state mini-bid process) that participants said will cover the district's share.
Eklund said the district filed within the E-Rate cycle and will submit additional projects in future cycles to address remaining schools in need of wiring upgrades.
What happens next: both items were presented with staff recommendations and will be placed on the board agenda as consent items for approval; staff said work could be scheduled as soon as funding commitments are confirmed.
