Fulton jail population edges up; county outlines jail maintenance blitz and $3.2M facility upgrades

Fulton County strategy and facilities staff reported an increase in the average jail population for April and outlined a multi‑phase maintenance blitz plus a $3.2 million capital package for urgent repairs and equipment upgrades.
Population and length of stay County staff said the April average jail population rose to 2,615 inmates, with a one‑day snapshot May 14 showing 2,705 inmates. At the May 13 snapshot the county reported an average duration of approximately 214 days in custody, with roughly 17% of the population detained more than a year.
Maintenance blitz and CIP work Real Estate Asset Management reported phase 1 completion of eight of 11 housing units in the maintenance blitz (73% complete) and said Area 3 North — a housing area for residents with physical or behavioral‑health needs — showed less damage than other zones and is projected for completion June 6. The county said it has completed the majority of preventive maintenance work orders and continues to address backlog and parts lead‑time constraints.
Capital projects funded The Board previously approved a $3.2 million package to address critical repairs; staff said the fire alarm upgrade is proceeding ahead of schedule with Siemens, new kitchen kettles and fryers have arrived and will be installed, and elevator modernization specifications are being finalized for bidding. Staff warned that elevator bids may require further review of funding and scheduling once responses return.
