Staff said auditors flagged positive and negative lunch balances during the audit, and the district has begun working with school staff to proactively collect low negative balances before they grow and to notify families with positive balances about options for refunds or donations. Staff said they would explore using quicker electronic notifications and personalized outreach by principals to families who may qualify for free or reduced meals but have not completed the application.
Committee members and staff discussed community donation options and local programs that sometimes clear school lunch debt. Staff said community donations already help reduce the oldest balances and that the food‑service account carries overdue amounts until donations or collections are applied. The committee asked staff to research local charity options and to form a subcommittee to develop creative approaches that avoid placing children in a position of food debt in school.
No formal vote was taken; staff said they will convene a working group and return with recommended steps to limit future balances and improve communication with families about program eligibility.
